Runa Laila — A childhood shaped by music
01 / EARLY LIFE

A childhood shaped by music

Runa Laila was born on 17 November 1952 in Sylhet. Music was part of her family life from an early age, and she began performing as a child. Her early interests also included dance, but singing soon became the art through which audiences would come to know her. Encouragement from her family and rigorous musical training helped her develop the confidence and versatility that would define her career.

02 / EARLY RECORDINGS

From young talent to playback star

Her film singing began at an exceptionally young age in the Urdu-language film industry. As a teenager she became a familiar voice in Pakistani cinema, recording songs that brought her success on radio and in films. Working with major composers and singers, she learned to move easily between melody, rhythm and styles—an ability that became one of her signatures.

Runa Laila — Songs across languages and borders
03 / A CROSS-BORDER VOICE

Songs across languages and borders

Her repertoire grew across Bengali, Urdu, Hindi, Punjabi and other languages of South Asia. She became widely known for her stirring renditions of folk and Sufi music, including Dama Dam Mast Qalandar, while continuing to sing for films and record popular songs. Her work in Bangladesh, Pakistan and India reached listeners who did not necessarily share a language but recognized the emotion in her voice.
